The Ten Gods in BaZi (十神): the roles the elements play around you

The next step after the elements and the Day Master

Once you already know the five elements and can identify your Day Master, a natural question arises: what does everything else in the chart mean? The answer is given by the system of the "Ten Gods" (十神, shí shén) — the language in which BaZi turns dry relationships between elements into understandable human roles: money, career, creativity, support, rivals. This is the heart of chart analysis, and, as always in BaZi, behind the imposing name hides a simple and coherent logic.

What the "Ten Gods" are and why there are ten

First, a reassurance: there are no gods here in any religious sense. A "god" (神) is merely the traditional name for a type of relationship between a sign in the chart and you. The Ten Gods are ten roles in which any element can stand in relation to you.

The key phrase is "in relation to you". Everything in a BaZi chart is measured against one sign — the Day Master (日主), the Heavenly Stem of the day pillar. It symbolizes you, your "self". Every other stem or branch then enters into a particular relationship with you: one nourishes you, one governs you, one is governed by you. It is the character of these relationships that the Ten Gods describe.

Where does the number ten come from? From the same arithmetic as the ten Heavenly Stems: five types of relationship × two polarities (yin and yang). First we will sort out the five relationships, and then split each one in half.

Five relationships instead of ten

Any element can stand in only one of five relationships to your Day Master. And they rest on two things you already know from the Wu Xing cycles: generation (one element feeds another) and control (one element overcomes another).

Suppose, for example, that your Day Master is Wood. Then the five relationships break down like this:

The five categories, using a Wood Day Master as an example
CategoryLink to the elementsExample (I am Wood)What this role is about
Companions
比劫
the same element as youWoodyourself, your equals, friends, competitors, independence
Output
食傷

財
what you controlEarthmoney, possessions, resources, desire, command of the world
Authority
官殺
what controls youMetalcareer, status, rules, responsibility, pressure
Resource
印
what generates youWaterknowledge, support, protection, learning, nurture

Notice how logical this is. What nourishes you (Water → Wood) becomes your resource — wisdom and support. What you nourish with your own energy (Wood → Fire) becomes your output — what you give to the world. What you overcome (Wood controls Earth) is your wealth, which you command. What overcomes you (Metal cuts Wood) is the authority that disciplines you. And what is equal to you is your companions.

Polarity splits each relationship in two

The five categories turn into ten gods thanks to polarity. Within each relationship, the other element can have the same polarity as your Day Master (both yang or both yin), or the opposite one (one yang, one yin). This gives the two variants in each pair.

There is a handy rule here. A relationship of opposite polarity is a yin–yang attraction, so such gods are "proper", balanced; their names usually carry the character 正 ("direct"): Direct Officer, Direct Wealth, Direct Resource. A relationship of the same polarity is sharper and more one-sided — these are the gods with the character 偏 ("indirect") or with their own names, such as "Seven Killings". Roughly: same polarity means strong, direct energy; opposite polarity means a softer, more harmonious one.

Now let us go through all ten. For convenience we will group them by their five categories — that is the easiest way to feel what each pair has in common and what separates the "direct" version from the "indirect" one.

Companions 比劫 — the same element as you

These are signs of your own type: your "self", and also those who stand on the same level as you — friends, peers, competitors. The category is responsible for independence, self-esteem and the ability (or inability) to share resources with others.

比肩Bǐ Jiān — the PeerCompanions · same polarity

Literally "shoulder to shoulder". This is your second self: an equal partner, a dependable comrade, a person of the same make as you. Bǐ Jiān gives reliance on your own strength, a sense of an inner core, and the ability to work in a team of equals. When there is a lot of it, the person is self-sufficient and principled, and dislikes being managed.

Strengths: confidence, independence, loyalty to oneself. Shadow side: stubbornness, ego, reluctance to compromise and to share.

劫財Jié Cái — Rob WealthCompanions · opposite polarity

The name means "the one who takes wealth away". This too is a sign of your type, but with the opposite polarity — more energetic, more daring, bolder than Bǐ Jiān. Excellent in action, charismatic, quick to find common ground. Yet it also competes with you for the same resources: money comes to it easily and just as easily slips through its fingers.

Strengths: decisiveness, drive, sociability, willingness to take risks. Shadow side: impulsiveness, rivalry, loss of money, conflicts.

Output 食傷 — what you generate

The element your Day Master feeds. This is everything you give to the world: talents, creativity, speech, ideas, the work of your hands. The category is responsible for the ability to express yourself and to "give birth" to a result.

食神Shí Shén — Eating GodOutput · same polarity

Literally the "eating god". This is a soft, natural flow of talent and enjoyment of life: art, taste, fine food, a calm joy in one's work. Shí Shén grants optimism, kindliness and the ability to do what you love without strain. Creativity here flows easily, almost by itself.

Strengths: talent, warmth, a taste for life, productivity without strain. Shadow side: laziness, a chase after comfort, a leaning toward excess.

傷官Shāng Guān — Hurting OfficerOutput · opposite polarity

The name means "the one who wounds the officer" — that is, it challenges authority and convention. This is a bright, unconventional, sharp talent: a performer, an innovator, a brilliant orator, a person who longs to stand out and cannot bear constraints. Shāng Guān gives more brilliance than the calm Shí Shén, but also more inner fire.

Strengths: giftedness, originality, eloquence, ambition. Shadow side: arrogance, fault-finding, conflict with rules, mood swings.

Wealth 財 — what you control

The element your Day Master overcomes. This is the world of matter that you are able to take in hand: money, possessions, resources, desire. The category is responsible for your capacity to command your surroundings and to draw a return from them.

偏財Piān Cái — Indirect WealthWealth · same polarity

"Live", fluid money: business, deals, opportunities, unexpected gains. Piān Cái is a broad gesture, an easy attitude to money, the knack of seeing a chance and seizing it. Such a person is usually generous, sociable and enterprising; money for them is a flow rather than a piggy bank.

Strengths: enterprise, generosity, a nose for opportunity, ease with money. Shadow side: risk-taking, spreading too thin, restlessness.

正財Zhèng Cái — Direct WealthWealth · opposite polarity

Stable, honestly earned money: salary, savings, a dependable income step by step. Zhèng Cái is practicality, thrift, a responsible attitude to property, and loyalty. Where Piān Cái risks for a big windfall, Zhèng Cái patiently builds prosperity and values what it already has.

Strengths: diligence, thrift, reliability, the ability to plan. Shadow side: over-caution, materialism, stinginess.

Authority 官殺 — what controls you

The element that overcomes your Day Master. These are the forces that restrain and discipline you: rules, duties, superiors, the law, status. The category is responsible for career, responsibility and the ability to withstand pressure.

七殺Qī Shā — Seven KillingsAuthority · same polarity

Literally "seven killings" (another name is 偏官, "Indirect Officer"). Do not be frightened by the name: this is pure strength and pressure, a challenge that will either break you or temper you. Qī Shā is the demanding boss, the warrior, the ability to act decisively in a crisis and to lead by force of will. Where there is a real challenge, this god comes into its own.

Strengths: courage, leadership, discipline, unbreakability under pressure. Shadow side: harshness, aggression, the risk of burnout, a tendency to lean on others.

正官Zhèng Guān — Direct OfficerAuthority · opposite polarity

The "Direct Officer" is orderly, lawful authority and well-earned status. Zhèng Guān gives a sense of duty, self-control, respect for the rules and a good reputation. This is a person of honor whom others rely on, who leads not by force but by authority and integrity. Softer and more harmonious than the impetuous Qī Shā.

Strengths: honesty, responsibility, reputation, leadership by the rules. Shadow side: rigidity, excessive conformism, a fear of stepping outside the lines.

Resource 印 — what generates you

The element that feeds your Day Master. This is everything that supports and replenishes you: knowledge, learning, care, protection, wisdom, a mother's nurture. The character 印 means "seal" — a symbol of recognition and authority. The category is responsible for your support and your ability to learn.

偏印Piān Yìn — Indirect ResourceResource · same polarity

An unconventional source of knowledge: intuition, self-education, narrow and unusual subjects, research, the esoteric. Piān Yìn gives an original mind, depth, and the ability to reach the truth by one's own, untrodden path. Its classical name is 梟神, the "owl": a wisdom that works at night, in solitude, rather than in a crowd.

Strengths: intuition, unconventional thinking, depth, independence in learning. Shadow side: overthinking, withdrawal, anxiety, detachment from practice.

正印Zhèng Yìn — Direct ResourceResource · opposite polarity

Caring, dependable support: formal education, mentors, protection, kindness, a mother's warmth. Zhèng Yìn gives wisdom, a moral footing, respect and the ability to learn from others. This is the resource that wraps around and shields you — a source of calm and of the inner confidence that there is someone to support you.

Strengths: wisdom, kindness, support, a love of knowledge, integrity. Shadow side: dependence, passivity, over-reliance on others, naivety.

An example: how to find the gods in a chart

So far this sounds abstract, so let us make it concrete. Suppose your Day Master is 甲 Jiǎ, Yang Wood. Then each of the ten Heavenly Stems becomes a specific god for you. Two questions are enough: "what element is this relative to Wood?" and "the same polarity, or the opposite?".

The ten gods for a 甲 (Yang Wood) Day Master
StemElement & polarityRelationship to WoodWhich god
甲Yang Woodsame element, same polarity比肩 Bǐ Jiān
乙Yin Woodsame element, opposite polarity劫財 Jié Cái
丙Yang FireWood generates Fire, same polarity食神 Shí Shén
丁Yin FireWood generates Fire, opposite polarity傷官 Shāng Guān
戊Yang EarthWood controls Earth, same polarity偏財 Piān Cái
己Yin EarthWood controls Earth, opposite polarity正財 Zhèng Cái

辛Yin MetalMetal controls Wood, opposite polarity正官 Zhèng Guān
壬Yang WaterWater generates Wood, same polarity偏印 Piān Yìn
癸Yin WaterWater generates Wood, opposite polarity正印 Zhèng Yìn

If your Day Master were a different element, the table would shift, but the logic would remain the same. This is exactly how a BaZi calculator program assigns the gods above each sign in your chart.

How to read the gods in your chart

A few bearings so you do not get lost at the start.

There are no "bad" gods. Names like "Seven Killings", "Rob Wealth" or "the one who wounds the officer" sound alarming, but they are only labels for a type of energy. Each god has a light side and a shadow side; whether it is good or not depends not on its name but on how well it fits your particular chart.

Balance matters, not the roster. Experienced analysis looks not at a single god but at the overall picture: which categories are abundant, which are lacking, and how strong the Day Master itself is. The very same Zhèng Cái is a blessing for a "strong" chart, yet for a "weak" one it may be an excessive burden.

The gods live in the branches too. The ten gods are assigned not only above the visible Heavenly Stems, but also above the hidden stems inside the Earthly Branches. So even a chart of eight characters in fact contains far more "roles".

For a first acquaintance this is enough. Simply learn to recognize which of the five categories a sign belongs to, and you are already reading the chart far more consciously.

A tip for beginners. Do not try to memorize all ten names at once. First master the five categories — companions, output, wealth, authority, resource. Look at which of them are most numerous in your chart: that alone will tell you a great deal about what your nature rests on — your own strength, creativity, the material, discipline, or support and knowledge.

Summary

The Ten Gods are ten roles in which the elements stand in relation to your Day Master. They reduce to five relationships (companions, output, wealth, authority, resource), and each relationship splits in two by polarity — a "direct", balanced variant and an "indirect", sharper one. Knowing this system, you stop seeing in a chart a random set of characters and begin to read in it a story about money, career, talents, relationships and support.

This is the very tool for whose sake one studies the elements and the stems in the first place. It is later deepened by chart structures, favorable and unfavorable elements, and the luck cycles by decade — but all of these rest on the same ten roles you have just met.

BaZi is a traditional symbolic system of self-knowledge and reflection, not an exact science or a way to predict the future. Treat it as a language of metaphors for thinking about your own character, and leave life's decisions to yourself.
