The Twelve Stages of Qi: the life cycle in a BaZi chart

The energy in a BaZi chart is not static — it breathes. Each Heavenly Stem passes through twelve stages, like a person from birth to old age and on to a new life. This cycle shows where in your chart the Qi is strong and where it is resting.

Before we begin. This is already the fourth conversation about the Four Pillars of Destiny; it will be easier if you are familiar with the Heavenly Stems, the Earthly Branches and the Day Master. And most important: names like "death" or "tomb" here are not literal — they are poetic names for phases of energy, like the seasons of the year. No phase is "bad".

What the stages of Qi are

In the classical system these are the twelve stages of life (十二长生, shí'èr chángshēng). The idea is simple and beautiful: no element exists "evenly" — it lives out a cycle: it is born, grows, reaches its peak, fades, hides and is reborn. Just as the Sun rises and sets, and the seasons replace one another.

Each Heavenly Stem passes through these twelve stages, "overlaying" the twelve Earthly Branches. That is, the same element will be in full bloom in one branch and in a phase of rest in another. Most often the cycle is applied to the Day Master, to see how strong your energy is in each pillar.

The twelve stages of life

Here is the whole cycle — from the first breath to a new conception. The "strength" column shows how strong the stem is in this phase.

How it works

Each of the ten element-stems has its own order of movement through the twelve branches. Yang stems move forward (clockwise), while yin stems move backward. So, for instance, Yang Wood (甲) and Yin Wood (乙) live out the cycle as mirror images.

There is also a fine inner logic: the "Birth", "Prime" and "Storehouse" phases of the yang stems fall exactly on the branch trios (三合) — for example, Wood is born in the Pig (亥), flourishes in the Rabbit (卯) and is hidden in the Goat (未). The system is consistent with itself.

To read your own chart, find the row of your Day Master in the table below and see which phase it stands in above the branch of each pillar.

Reference table

The rows are the ten stems, the columns the twelve stages (by the numbers from the table above). In the cells is the Earthly Branch on which the stem experiences that phase.

Strong and weak phases

The stages of Qi are another way to assess the strength of the Day Master, alongside roots and hidden stems. The general rule is this:

  • The strongest phases are Birth (长生), Taking Office (临官) and Prime (帝旺). Here the stem is "at home": firm, resourceful, confident.
  • The weakest phases are Illness, Stillness, Storehouse, Extinction (病死墓绝). The stem is depleted — but these are phases of rest, preservation and rebirth, not of misfortune.

Especially personal is the phase above the day branch: it is the "seat" in which the Day Master itself sits (自坐, zìzuò). It says a great deal about a person's inner state, regardless of what is happening on the outside.

An example: the phases of our chart

Let us return to the chart from the introductory articles — someone born on March 21, 1986, Day Master 甲 (Yang Wood). We look at which phase 甲 stands in above the branch of each pillar.

YearMonthDayHour
Branch 寅 Tiger 卯 Rabbit 子 Rat
well-being
巳 Snake
Qi phase (for 甲) 临官
Taking Office
帝旺
Prime
沐浴
Bathing
病
Illness

The picture speaks for itself. In the year and the month the Day Master stands in the phases "Taking Office" and "Prime" — this is the peak of strength. What in the previous articles we saw as a "strong, deeply rooted tree" is confirmed here from a third angle: roots, hidden stems and the Qi phases all say "strong". This is exactly how a reliable reading is built — through the coincidence of several independent clues.

And the day pillar "sits" on the phase of Bathing — a note of curiosity, charm and a certain restlessness at the very core of the personality. In the hour, the energy softens to the phase of Illness: closer to the "evening" of the chart the element becomes more sensitive and more turned inward.

The names that frighten

"Death", "tomb", "extinction", "illness" — it sounds alarming, but they should not be taken literally. These are metaphors for phases of energy, like night, sleep or winter. The "stillness" phase is a time of rest and letting go; "storehouse" is preservation and depth; "extinction" is a quiet point before renewal. None of them foretells disaster.

If your chart has such phases, this is not a verdict but a hint about rhythm: somewhere it is natural to act at full strength, and somewhere to conserve and to mature.

How to relate to this

The twelve phases remind us of the simplest and deepest truth: everything moves in cycles. Strength comes and goes, and after the bottom there always follows a rebirth. To know your phases is to stop fighting your own rhythm: to act boldly in the prime and to be gentle with yourself in the decline.

So, when reading your chart, ask not "am I strong or weak?" but "which phase am I in right now — and what is it asking of me?".
